Cort L. Cheney, 69, of West Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at IU Health Arnett Hospital.

He was born August 16, 1952, in Columbus, OH, to the late John and Emma (Shields) Cheney.

Cort graduated from St. Charles Illinois High School in 1970 and Illinois State University in 1974 with a BS in Business.

On 10/27/1979 he married Susan Gutzler in Bloomington, IL and she survives.

Cort and Susan have lived in the Lafayette area since 1987 and have enjoyed spending half the year in The Villages, FL for the past seven winters.

Cort began his career as a financial advisor with Edward Jones in 1980. After years of being a top producer at Edward Jones, Cort founded Cheney Investment Group in 1998. The name was changed to Cornerstone Financial in 2004. He continued to work part-time up until his passing in a career he truly loved as he enjoyed helping clients achieve their financial goals.

Cort enjoyed playing pickleball and golf. He won the Lafayette City Senior Golf Championship and won the Coyote Crossing Club Championship twice. He also won the Florida Senior Open (golf) and placed in many pickleball tournaments. He was instrumental in developing the local Lafayette area Pickleball Club into what it is today. He volunteered as a golf coach for Tecumseh Jr. High in the 90s. He was a former member of Covenant Church for many years and currently is a member of Calvary Church in West Lafayette and Live Oaks Community Church in The Villages, FL. He started and helped lead the men’s ministry at Calvary Church, was very involved with the local ministry Young Life, and was currently volunteering for Samaritan’s Purse. He has been a speaker at Westville Correctional Facility and the Great Banquet and was a former Lafayette Christian School Foundation Board Member.

Surviving with his wife, Susan of West Lafayette are two sons, Grant Cheney and Garrett (wife Jennifer) Cheney both of West Lafayette, two brothers, Clark (wife Cathy) Cheney of St. Charles, IL and Cal (wife Joyce) Cheney of Broomfield, CO. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Millie and Caroline Cheney.

Friends may call from 1:00 pm until the time of the service at 4:00 pm on Monday, May 16, 2022 at Calvary Church at 310 Kalberer Rd. West Lafayette, IN 47906

Keeping with Cort’s wishes the family is choosing cremation, since a cemetery will not be used in lieu of flowers they have asked that memorial contributions be made in Cort’s name to Greater Lafayette Young Life, Calvary Church, or Live Oaks Community Church.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at Live Oaks Community Church in The Villages, FL in the fall.

I am so saddened by the passing of your precious loved one. Cort was a warrior for Christ and is now in the presence of his awesome LORD JESUS. I thank the Lord for the opportunity to know Cort. He was and is a blessing in my life as well as a blessing to so many many others.. We will all meet again some day soon.. ✝️?❤️ Love in Jesus always, Ernie

Susan, Garrett and Grant: Our lives were all made richer by knowing Cort! He was truly one of a kind. May you find comfort knowing how lucky we all were. I have no doubt he is entertaining in heaven today!

A memory I have of Cort is from his early days at Edward D. Jones when his office was on South St. I had an appointment to meet him and somehow it got overlooked and he wasn't able to meet with me when I went to his office. I was a bit disappointed by that but on his own initiative, Cort came by our house personally to apologize and brought a company mug with treats in it. He was a thoughtful, caring man to many people and will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

My recent impressions of Cort were he & Garrett inviting me to lunch at my choice of dates & places. I asked if I could bring my son, Dr. Ryan VanMatre on a Monday because he practices in Delphi on Mondays. I knew little about our investments & have totally trusted Cort to handle for me… Gary did, too. After doing this 3 yrs in a row, I asked this duo how they made time for all their clients to go to lunch? With a twinkle in his eye & smile on his face, Cort said, “ The Bible tells us to take care of our widows.”

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

My sincerest condolences to Cort’’s wife and family. No one was more thoughtful and caring as a friend. We met on the golf course years ago and those memories are still with me today. RIP, my friend.

Cort was our financial advisor for many years. he was the best and did us well. But more than that - he was a great human being! We will miss him! Andy and Sue Bires
