Chris made a significant impact on me as my advisor for my entire 3.5 years at Purdue. I learned from him about how to be disciplined and rigorous in research and presentation while he was rather generous in many ways to his students. I was late to know that he was fighting against a major cancer and his passing. Upon learning his recovery from his major cancer battle, we communicated a few times before my younger brother was diagnosed with the same cancer. He wrote to me in helping my brother by sharing his battle with this cancer almost daily in the first few weeks. I could not thank him more than enough as an academic advisor and a friend to share his top-level research and life experience. In 2018, while I met with him and Karen at Purdue, I firmly believed that we would meet again in the future. Unfortunately, I deeply regret that this was our last time.

I was taught by Chris (I always called him Dr Hoffmann) as an undergrad nearly twenty years ago. He was very kind to me during a difficult period in my life and I will never forget it. May he rest in peace.

Chris had a profound influence on my life and career. Just over 20 years ago, as a student in his class, I started to work on a research project with him and subsequently co-authored several papers. During that time, he was incredibly supportive of me and extraordinarily generous with his time (an example I try to follow with my students). I wouldn’t be where I am today without his willingness to take me on as a research student and the mentorship and guidance he provided. I haven’t communicated with Chris much since leaving Purdue, and I regret not telling him more about the impact he had on me. However, I think that it is only in reflecting on his loss that I recognized the deep impact he had on me. I thank him for that, and I send my best wishes to his family.

Jennifer and I are terribly grieved by Chris's premature death. We are unable to attend the memorial because of a family memorial in another city. Chris was my next-door office neighbor from the day I arrive in Purdue in 1994 until he retired. We worked together on several projects and grants. I always admired his wisdom and clever ideas. Beyond work, Chris was my friend. Every day that I saw him, I dropped what I was doing to chat about family, politics, and life in general. I will always cherish the memories of our times together.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

A passionate researcher, dedicated teacher, Chris, your legacy and contribution to solid modeling and geometric computing will live on. I am fortunate to have you as a teacher in my early career and as a colleague in recent years. May your soul rest in peace.

To Karen and Leah and family, He was one of the most honest people I've ever met. His smile lit up the room when it landed on you! I last saw him in person at the Westminster Village gym. He couldn't stay and talk because he was headed to boxing class for his Parkinson's. I send you warm hugs and much love. I will do my best to be at his memorial service.

Dear Karen, My condolences to you and your family. I remember Chris as always sharp of intellect with a quick sense of humour and wry sparkle in his eyes to go with it. Yours, Tony

Young J. Kim left a message on June 29, 2023:
Chris, my Ph.D. supervisor at Purdue, held a special place in my heart. He wasn't just a great mentor and supporter but also a dear friend—a bond often hard to forge in Asian culture, where the relationship between a student and their advisor tends to be more formal. But with Chris, it was different. He filled the role of a father figure for me during my time away from home. I still vividly recall the day I introduced my own father to him, just as I was nearing graduation. The three of us shared a memorable dinner together, creating a cherished memory in my heart. Beyond his guidance and mentorship, Chris's jokes, even though they could be quite complex at times, added a touch of joy to our interactions. In 2019, as I embarked on a conference trip, I made a special detour to Purdue to bid a final farewell to Chris, a day I had dreaded. Even then, his voice was barely audible, but he dedicated most of that afternoon to spending time with Karen, whose invaluable advice regarding my son I still deeply appreciate. My heart is filled with grief as I extend my deepest condolences to Chris's family, with a special mention to Karen. Warm regards, Young J. Kim from Seoul, Korea.
