Charles was born December 30, 1939, in Mt. Vernon, IL and passed away June 09,
2023 in Indianapolis, IN.
Charles is survived by his wife, Kay Burton Mayberry, his daughter, Charla
Whitehead (Eric), his grandson, Jarret Whitehead (Brooklynn), and brothers Bob
Mayberry (Phyllis), Jim Mayberry (Barb), and Johnnie Mayberry (Sue).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Edna Doerr Mayberry, two
sisters, Louise Brown and Libby Finney, and his special Uncle and Aunt John and
Dorothy Mayberry Wood.
His mother passed away when he was seven years old. Charles moved to St.
James, Missouri to live with his uncle and aunt, John and Dorothy Wood. When
he was seventeen years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Charles married Kay
Burton on August 16, 1963, in St. James, MO. They moved to Great Lakes, IL
where their daughter, Charla, was born in 1964.
Charles served 30 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring on April 01, 1989.
His greatest love as a sailor was service at sea. He served tours on the USS Jarvis,
USS English, USS Chemung, USS Saratoga, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Charles served two tours at San Diego, CA; El Toro, CA; Kodiak, AK; Long Beach,
CA; two tours at Norfolk, VA; Adak, AK; Great Lakes, IL; Saigon, Vietnam; Long
Beach, CA; Vietnam coast; Subic Bay, Philippines; Da Nang, Vietnam; two tours at
Keflavik, Iceland; Mayport, FL; and two tours at NROTC Purdue University, West
Lafayette, IN as Command Senior Chief Petty Officer.
Charles was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Gold star (recipient five
times), Navy Unit Commendation with one Bronze star, Navy Meritorious Unit
Commendation with three Bronze stars, Good Conduct Award with four Bronze
stars, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal (recipient two
times), Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze stars, Sea Service Deployment
Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with two Bronze stars, Vietnam Gallantry Cross
with Palm, Vietnam Civil Action with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Enlisted
Surface Warfare Specialist Senior Command, and Command Senior Chief.
Throughout his life, Charles faithfully and selflessly served God, country, and
family.
While in the Navy, Charles traveled worldwide; nonetheless, he was passionate
about visiting all 50 states here at home. He was blessed to complete the 50th
state with Charla in September 2022.
After his retirement, he began volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in 1991. His
Habitat co-volunteers became his extended family. Together they built 319
houses. Charles also volunteered for Brady Lane Church. His volunteer service
did not end until his passing.
Charles loved the Lord and was thankful for God’s protection for him and his
family.
Memorials contributions in Charles’ name may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am until time of service at 2:00 pm, Friday, June 16, 2023, at Brady Lane Church, 2701 Brady Lane, Lafayette, IN 47909 with Reverend William Overbay officiating.
Military Honors will be rendered at the end of the service.
Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia
