Carolyn Ann Hirsch, loving wife and mother to Andrew and Allie Hirsch, respectively, passed away on May 17, 2023.
Carolyn, born on May 5, 1946, was the only child of Robert Max Brown and Martha Margaret Brown. She grew up in Speedway, Indiana and attended Ball State University to pursue a business degree. After college and a brief move to Massachusetts, Carolyn moved back to Indiana and worked at Great Lakes Chemical, the Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and the Tippecanoe County Humane Society.
At the time she and Andrew met, she was working as a wine distributor. As fate would have it, Andrew and a colleague sponsored a wine tasting, and Carolyn was among the attendees. The rest, as they say, is history. Andrew and Carolyn were married in 1983. Three years later, Allie was born.
Carolyn became a stay-at-home mother and dedicated time to Allie’s education and creative pursuits as well as to her neighborhood and the West Lafayette community at large. After the passing of Max, Margaret moved to West Lafayette to be closer to her granddaughter. Carolyn and Margaret saw each other nearly every day for many years, and the whole family enjoyed vacations together in Wyoming, Colorado and Michigan.
Carolyn’s devotion to animals, especially her beloved retired racing Greyhounds, was known to all her friends. She became a fierce advocate for retired racers after adopting the family’s first greyhound, Angel, in 2001. Her compassion for animals knew no bounds and touched the lives of many, human and animal alike.
Carolyn was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014. For many years thereafter, she enjoyed her life at home. Wonderful people from Home Instead provided companionship and stimulation. When her disease progressed to the point that at-home care was no longer possible, Carolyn moved to Westminster Village. There, she received excellent care until her passing.
