Carl E. Johnson, 91
Carl E. Johnson, 91, of West Lafayette, died at 2:37 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, at St. Elizabeth East.
Born Nov. 21, 1918, in Twelve Mile, Cass County, he was the son of the late Gustaf Albert and Rosa Gustafson Johnson.
He graduated from Purdue University in 1941 with a bachelor?s degree in agronomy. He served in the Navy during World War II as a first lieutenant junior grade on the U.S.S. Chickasaw during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
On June 8, 1941, he married Charlotte N. Nicodemus in Walton, and she died Sept. 14, 2004.
Mr. Johnson was an agronomist, owning and operating fertilizer plants in Howard, Grant, Miami and Knox counties.
He was a member of Covenant Church in West Lafayette, American Legion and John Purdue Club. He enjoyed golf, Purdue sports, bridge, reading, and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are three daughters, Ann Pickett (husband: Dr. John Pickett, DVM) of Lafayette, Lyn Lang (husband: Michael) of The Villages, Fla., and Kristin Chittick (husband: John) of Paris, Ill.; two sons, Philip Johnson (wife: Pamela Johnson) of Prescott, Ariz., and the Rev. Craig Davis-Johnson (wife: the Rev. Deborah Davis-Johnson) of Portland, Maine; two sisters, Lois Jean McCrea (husband: Tom) of Logansport and Maxine Hatchel (husband: the Rev. William Hatchel) of Florissant, Mo.; and a brother, Wayne Johnson (wife: Gladys) of Greeley, Colo.
Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Jack Pickett, Heather Pickett, Luke Pickett, Elizabeth Lang, Erin Johnson, Gordon Johnson, Micah Davis-Johnson, Talya Davis, Rachel Davis-Johnson, Allana Chittick, Nic Chittick and Braden Chittick; 5 great-grandchildren, and a very close friend, Lucille Schaffer of Defiance, Ohio.
Visitation from 10 a.m. until service time at 12 p.m. Tuesday at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
