Bruce A. Higginson, 72, of Lafayette, IN, passed away at home on Wednesday August 31, 2022. He was born on September 30, 1949, in Memphis, TN, to the late Marvin and Enes (Gherardini) Higginson. The family moved to Lafayette in 1953 where Bruce remained a resident until his death.
Bruce graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1967 and attended Ball State University.
He served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 6 years and received an Honorable Discharge. Bruce worked a few years for National Homes in Lafayette building prefabricated homes. Later, looking for a change, he discovered railroading and worked for Norfolk & Southern Railroad for nearly 20 years. Bruce loved the fresh air and open road travel the railroad offered. He retired a conductor on freight trains traveling through Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. He had numerous stories of life on the road.
Over the years Bruce enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and motorcycle riding with friends. He also enjoyed watching and attending, when possible, auto and motorcycle racing. Bruce was an avid follower of all auto racing especially the Indy 500 and Formula 1 racing. He also owned a ‘67 Corvette for over 40 years. He never got a ticket with the Vette but became friends with a few of the local officers. He could make that car sing. Bruce was a member of the United Transportation Union, Indiana Sheriff’s Association and a life member of the NRA.
Surviving is his brother Carl and (Mary) Higginson of Merrimack, NH. Also surviving are his nephew Scott and (Gayla) Higginson of Fishers, IN. and their two children, Liam and Conor. And his niece Kelly A. (Higginson) Frazier of Merrimack, NH.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm on Thursday September 8, 2022, until time of service at 2 pm at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Internment will be at Spring Vale Cemetery, Lafayette, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Bruce’s memory.
