Brenda Joyce Barton-Mack, 63, passed away peacefully without fear or pain on Friday, October 30, 2026 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, IN.
She was Apostolic Pentecostal and was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost.
Brenda was born August 14, 1963, in West Monroe, Louisiana, to Delores J. Stevenson-McGee and James H. Barton.

Surviving is her husband Melvin Mack, her first-born son Brandon Keith Barton, and her grandson, Brandon “Buster” Barton, whom she lovingly raised as her own son and his wife Kadence Barton who held a special place in her heart. Her two grandsons, Brady and Kaedon.
Her beloved uncle and father figure, David Stevenson. Her siblings are Jamie (Ron) Pickering, Steve (Valerie) McGee, Jennifer (Frank). Sheremetta, and M. Melanie McGee-Dorsey. She also leaves behind so many cherished nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, each of whom shared a unique and meaningful bond with her. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and dear friends who were like family to her.
Some people spend their lives being cared for, while others seem to have been put on this earth to care for everyone around them. Brenda was most certainly one of the latter. Caring for others wasn’t simply something she did. It was who she was.
For years, she devoted herself to caring for the elderly, but her caregiving never ended when the workday was over. She was the person who checked on everyone, often daily, just to make sure they were okay. She showed up with food, offered help before anyone thought to ask, and made it her business to know that the people she loved were taken care of. If you were someone she cared about, chances are she was checking on you whether you thought you needed checking on or not.
Brenda was feisty, sassy, and wonderfully outspoken. She had a way of saying exactly what was on her mind, and she wasn’t particularly concerned with dressing it up. She loved to pick, tease, and give people a hard time, and those who knew her best understood that this was often one of the ways she showed affection. You didn’t have to wonder where you stood with her. She would tell you.
She absolutely adored her husband, Melvin, whose quieter presence complemented her spirited personality. Where she was outspoken and full of fire, he was a steady, quiet force beside her. Their relationship was one of the great loves of her life.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, niece, sister, and daughter.
Her mother, Delores McGee was not only her mother but also her best friend. The two shared countless everyday adventures, often traveling from grocery store to grocery store in search of the best bargains. What might have seemed like ordinary errands to others became time spent together, filled with companionship, conversation, and the simple joy of being in each other’s company. Brenda loved to have her mom braid her hair and would go to her house every morning to have her hair done.
Her life was not without hardship. She knew struggles that others may never fully understand. But those challenges were only one part of her story. So much of who she was could be seen in the way she continued to show up for others, even when life itself had not always been gentle with her. She leaves behind a legacy of love expressed through action. Through meals delivered, daily phone calls, unexpected visits, laughter, teasing, and the countless little things she did to make sure no one felt forgotten.
Those who loved her will miss her unmistakable personality, her quick wit, her straightforward honesty, and perhaps most of all, the reassurance of knowing she was always looking out for them.
And now, after a lifetime of looking after everyone else, it is her turn to rest.
The hands that brought comfort to so many can finally be still. The heart that carried so much can finally know peace.
Funeral services will be held on November 9, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Star City Church, 201 Veterans Memorial Parkway East, Lafayette, IN 47905. Visitation will take place prior to the service from Noon to 1:00 pm.
