Bonita F. “Bonnie” Andrews, 99, of West Lafayette passed away at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 into the loving arms of the Lord.
She was born May 8, 1918 in Lafayette to the late Orville E. and Nellie P. (Parvis) House.
After graduating from Dayton High School in 1936 as valedictorian, Bonnie went on to receive her BS in Dietetics from Purdue University in 1940. Following an internship at Cleveland Clinic, she worked as a dietitian at Cook County and Northwestern Hospitals in Chicago.
Her marriage was to William Charles “Bill” Andrews, the love of her life since second grade, on November 11, 1944 in Dayton. He passed away January 28, 2016.
Bonnie’s past honors include State of Indiana High School Latin Champion (2 Years), National Merit Scholarship winner, National 4-H Food Preparation First Place Winner in the U.S, Omicron Nu. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Circle 19, and Tristella Honorary, past president of Happy Hollow Garden Club, Tourist Club, chairman of Mayor Williamson’s committee to get a swimming pool for West Lafayette, Psi Iota Xi, past President of Lafayette Home Hospital Auxiliary, organized and supervised beginning of Home Hospital Gift Shop and first Home Hospital Fair, The Junior League of South Bend and The League Club, Naples, FL, PEO-Chapter AY, The Lafayette Country Club, John Purdue Club, Presidents Council and Purdue Alumni Association.
Bonnie enjoyed Bible Study Fellowship, golf, reading and bridge. She was passionate about service, love and leadership to her sisters of Alpha Chi Omega in a lifelong commitment of 80 years. Bonnie served as Chapter and Financial Advisor, ATA Alumnae President and House Corporation Board. She went on to be Province President for the State of Indiana, where all of her chapters won national awards in a Convention year. She won the Alumnae Appreciation Award of 1993 at the National Convention in Palm Springs. Bonnie was proud to have three Alpha Chi Omega legacies, two daughters and one granddaughter.
She loved her faith in Jesus Christ, family, friends and Fox News.
Her legacy lives on through her two daughters, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Daughters: Deb Poelstra (Dave), Bonnie Hockema (Bob) Grandchildren: William Marshall (Vickie), Melissa Cowsert (Rob), Jeffrey Marshall (Megan), Andrew Poelstra, Darcy Knott (Jake), Joshua Poelstra, Ashley Claxton (Brady), Bob Hockema (Amy), Jennifer Hockema, Will Hockema (Emily). Great Grandchildren: Sidney and Taylor Marshall, Lexi Cowsert, Mikylah and Jayden Marshall, Xavier, Gisele and Charlize Knott, Caden, Chloe and Carson Claxton, Charlie, Henry and Hilary Hockema.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cherie Marshall (Chuck), a brother, Irwin M. House and a sister, Melba K. House.
The family would like to thank Dr. Marcella Gibbs and Dr. Kurt Schleck along with the compassionate nurses and staff at Westminster who loved her.
Friends may call from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd Lafayette, IN. Funeral Services will be held at Central Presbyterian Church at 10:30 am on Monday November 13, 2017 with Rev. Lucia Oerter officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery in West Lafayette.
