Dr. Betty M. Suddarth passed away at Westminster Village on May 13, 2023, at 9:06 PM. Betty was born to Franklin and Jeanette Julow on Dec 12, 1928, in Kokomo, IN. As a child, Betty and her family helped many in their community through the difficulties of the Great Depression and World War II. In 1947, Betty began her education at Purdue University as a chemistry major and worked as a statistician for Purdue following graduation. In 1952, Betty married Stanley K. Suddarth, and they had 3 children, Jonathan, Jane, and Steve.
In 1969, Betty completed a Ph.D. in education at Purdue and began a long career of contributions related to helping students and planning for the university. Betty led efforts to predict enrollments across all state universities in Indiana, including all Purdue campuses that was used to predict student body sizes and composition into the 1990s. These studies were instrumental in planning expansions, reallocations, recruitment, and student services. In 1980, Betty was appointed Registrar of Purdue, a position in which she served until 1994 when she retired. Betty also served as the President of IACRO, the association of college registrars.
Upon retirement, Betty actively contributed to many community organizations, including Rotary and PEO. Betty is survived by her daughter Jane, son Steve, son-in-law John, daughter-in-law Deborah, and grandchildren, Michael, Anne, Mary, Kristen, and Samuel.
Tribute Time for Betty will be at Westminster Village in the Cardinal and Tulip Tree Rooms Friday, June 9, 10am to 12 noon. Open House with Family Sharing at 11am. Refreshments served. Betty’s interment will be at Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo, Saturday, June 10 at 10am. In Lieu of flowers, please consider Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette or Niches Land Trust.
