Michelle Schaefer, Bettie's daughter left a message on January 27, 2024:
I love this mother-daugher story and hope you do, too: I grew up in Denver, and my favorite dive restaurant was called Jerusalem. I would often go and savor the baba ganoush, stuffed grape leaves, and falafel with hummus wraps. One of the young women who worked there and I would get to talking as I waited for my order. Sometimes, she'd sit with me as I ate. She was from the Middle East and hadn't seen her mother in over five years. I spent almost every night hanging out with my mom and could not imagine what she was going through. I talked about Momma all the time, and she would tell me stories about her life with her mother in Morocco. One night, I found myself without a ride home from Jerusalem. Of course, I called my mom, and she told me she was on her way to get me. The Moroccan woman was so excited to meet my mom--practically a celebrity, I'd talked about her so much. Momma arrived. When I slid into the passenger seat, carefully balancing my take-home order, the Moroccan woman ran outside. I rolled down my window and introduced them. The woman said to my mom, in her gorgeous Moroccan accent, "She loves you too much!" From then on, that became our special phrase to one another. "I love you too much." One would head out the door to go to the store and shout, "I love you too much!" to the other. We threw ourselves into it, accents and all, and thoroughly enjoyed throwing this phrase around (to each other ONLY) with abandon. My dearest sweet Momma, you were the most perfect mother for me that I could imagine. You always met my tenderness with tenderness. You were always gentle with me, and joyful and generous and kind. I am so deeply grateful to God that you were--are--always will be---my one and only mother. I love you too much!

So sorry to hear about Bettie's passing. We enjoyed having her as a guest in our home during her cousin visits. She was such a sweet lady, but an adventurous teenager. She always entertained us with her beautiful smile and ways to have fun.

My deepest condolences Geri and Michelle. Your sister and your Mom was such a sweet beautiful lady inside and out. Always had a smile on her face and I miss seeing her at the credit union. My prayers are with you and your family during this time. God Bless.
