Bard Richard DeFrane, 50, of Lafayette, IN passed away on June 29, 2023. Bard passed at a nursing/rehab facility located in Greenwood, Indiana after suffering for many years with health complications. He was a 1991 graduate of Jefferson Highschool. He also attended Purdue University for a short time.
In a word, Bard was curious, and his inquisitiveness and keen intellect drove all his pursuits. His multiple passions were playing pool, tennis, weightlifting, bowling, fishing, watching baseball, political interests, fighter jets, swimming, heavy metal music, guns, chess, practical jokes, movie trivia, video games, good food and most importantly his friends and family. Bard loved life and loved his friends. You had a great treasure in your life if Bard called you a friend.
Bard had a few animal companions over the years. He would have had more if circumstances would have allowed it. There was a beloved German Shepard from his youth that he would talk fondly about over the years.
It seemed that Bard had a friend group for any activity he had a passion for. Bard’s character and easy demeaner made people love to laugh. He always had a joke or made a comment that would bring out a laugh, groan, or an eye roll. Even in sickness he tried to bring a smile to those around him.
Bard’s spiritual journey was mainly found in his adult life. Bard made a profession of Christian faith and was active for several years in the Battle Ground UMC. Even after he became home bound, Bard still wanted to serve as much as possible with the church. Bard loved serving in any way possible, from the Easter breakfasts to tutoring at the local middle school. He is with Jesus now.
Family Who Went Before
Bard was preceded in death by Father Kenneth DeFrane, who died April 26, 1991.
Grandparents Frank and Iva Mahlke, Grandmother Violet Connolly
Family He Left Behind
He is survived by his mother Cheryl (Mahlke) DeFrane and Aunt and Uncle Janice and Jim Patton.
Bard was strong, in body, heart and mind. This led to many discussions over the years with his friends. He would defend his point of view and you could still call him friend at the end of it. When his time came, Bard was certain of his decision, and he went as he wanted to, full of love for those that called him friend and family. He loved his mom and respected her deeply. He will be missed dearly.
A celebration of Bard’s life will be Saturday November 4, 2023, at 11:00am at Battleground United Methodist Church
