Barbara H. “Jeanne” Dible passed away peacefully at her home in Lafayette on July 23rd. She had experienced health challenges over the last several years.
Jeanne was born in Brainardsville, NY on June 14, 1929, the fourth-born child of six children of Ralph and Gretchen Hoy. Both Ralph and Gretchen were accomplished musicians. Throughout Jeanne's childhood, the family lived in Arlington, VA, Lake Placid, NY, Pittsburgh, PA, and Malone, NY. Jeanne graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women (later Chatham College and Chatham University) in Pittsburgh, PA and briefly worked as a social worker and family court probation officer. She met her future husband, Len, in the Pittsburgh area, married in 1952, and soon became a homemaker and mother to four children. Len’s work with ALCOA resulted in moves from Pittsburgh, PA to Lebanon, PA, and then to Bettendorf, IA before moving to Lafayette in 1971.
Jeanne was an accomplished pianist who had a unique gift and could play any tune by ear. She was a member of the Cherry Lane Dudes and played every Friday afternoon at Jenk’s Rest. Throughout her life, Jeanne volunteered at various organizations including her father’s charity, Recordings for Recovery, and for special needs children. She was an active member of First Christian Church in Lafayette. She looked forward to her annual trips to the Adirondacks and being surrounded by her extended family whom she loved dearly. Jeanne was a loving and devoted mother, wife, friend, and grandmother who always sought to bring cheer through her music, quick wit, her vast collection of clean jokes, and cartoons that she often drew to bring levity to life's challenges.
She is survived by two sons, Jeff (Karen) of Attica, IN and Chris (Lynne) of Santa Barbara, CA; twin daughters Gretchen of Sherman Oaks, CA and Jennifer of Brookfield, WI, and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Amanda, both in Southern CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (Marshall, Lowell, and Malcolm Hoy) and her beloved husband of 62 years, Leonard “Len” Dible. She has two surviving twin sisters, Janet (Chuck) Sterling of Vernon, CT and Joanne (Jim) O’Roark of Santa Barbara, CA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Christian Church of Lafayette, IN under her name or Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA. A memorial service will be held in the weeks ahead.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 10, 2018 at First Christian Church, 329 N. 6th Street, Lafayette, IN with Pastor Phillip Hayes officiating.
