Alvin Leon Fletcher, 82 of Lafayette died February 18, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Hospital surrounding by family. Leon was born in Warren County on December 16, 1934 to the late Leba and Louise(Fell) Fletcher. He attended school in Warren County, graduating from Pine Village High School in 1952. Leon married Carole Blind on May 24,1953 and she survives.
Moving to Lafayette in 1953, Leon worked as a mechanic before joining the Lafayette Fire Department. He retired after 21 years from the city fire department and went to Purdue Fire and Safety, retiring again from Purdue. During his fire department days, he always worked part time at various places.
After his 2nd retirement he worked on projects for Habitat for Humanity and anything and everything at his church, Bethany Presbyterian Church. Leon always was busy doing projects and repairs for his family and friends. He loved to fish and has many stories of his yearly fishing trips with the guys. He especially enjoyed fishing with Mike his son, Brian his son-in-law, many friends and his grandchildren who swear his fish counter was rigged. Leon was avid Purdue Men’s Basketball fan.
Surviving is his son Michael Leon Fletcher of Lafayette, daughter Robin Fletcher Winter (husband Brian) of Lafayette, 4 grandsons, Wesley (Amber) Fletcher of Peru, Joshua Fletcher Winter of Glendale Heights, IL, Nick Fletcher (Stephanie) of Lafayette, and Keegan Winter of Arizona. Great grandchildren are Kylie Fletcher, Wyatt and Austin Fletcher, Rheilynn Fletcher, Cooper and Khloe Fletcher. Also surviving is his brother Robert LaVerne Fletcher (Kay) of Ohio and sister Loreta Kiger (Paul) of Minnesota, daughter-in-law Ann Fletcher of Delphi. Many cousins, nieces and nephews survive along with special family friend Jane Phillips. He also was Dad to many, many young people whom he came in contact with over the years. Preceded in death by a brother, Lamar (Tuff) Fletcher.
Visitation 5 to 8 pm Monday, February 20th at Soller-Baker, Lafayette Chapel with Last Alarm Service at 7:30. Funeral service Tuesday at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 3305 Longlois Drive, Lafayette, IN 47904 at 10am.Burial Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Pastors Kevin Bowers and Laura Penney Bade officiating. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions to Bethany Presbyterian Church or charity of choice.
