Alton C. Hines, 88 and known as “Pickles” to many, of Lafayette ran to Jesus on Sunday, May 7th, 2023, at Milner Community Health Care in Rossville.
Born September 9, 1934 near Lafayette to the late Frank and Vesta (Studebaker) Hines, Alton was beloved by his family, friends, and many others whose lives he touched. He worked as a carpenter at National Homes for 33 years. Upon National Homes’ closure, he went to work at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 14 years. After retirement in 1999, he began working at Lafayette Auto Supply and did so for another 14 years.
Alton was deeply committed to his church. He was a longtime member of Linnwood Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon, recordkeeper, and as “the gum man,” always having a stick of gum for the kids after services, and later was a member at Brady Lane Church of Christ. Alton also enjoyed woodworking, Western movies and shows, and travel, but more than anything, his family.
Surviving is his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Anita H. (Emmons) Hines of Lafayette, daughter Judi (Donn) Stanfield of Lafayette, son Alan (Jill) Hines of Lafayette, son Robert “Hank” (Lori) Hines of Lafayette, son Alton “Dean” Hines of Kentland, and daughter Kathy Palmer of Anderson, South Carolina. Also surviving are grandsons Jason (Christina) Stanfield, Jonathon (Laura) Stanfield, Jordan Funk, and Matthew Hines, all of Lafayette, and granddaughters Hailey (Hines) Jahn of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Emma Hines of Lafayette, 12 additional grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and sisters Beverly (Del) Harper and Harriett DeBoy, both of Lafayette.
Alton was preceded in death by two brothers.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, May 15th, 2023 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd in Lafayette. The funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 16th, 2023, also at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel with Jeff Keller officiating. Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette.
Memorial contributions may be made in Alton’s name to Brady Lane Church of Christ.
