Alfred W. Moon, 73, of West Lafayette, passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Franciscan Health East.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Sandy (Storey).
“Al” graduated from Bishop Noll High School, Purdue University and earned his Master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan College.
He served in the Army and was an assistant Chaplain during the Vietnam war. He was Awarded 2d Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas, “Soldier of God Citation” for outstanding service in the Pre-Cana Program, his willingness to work helped to make the Roman Catholic program more effective.
Al enjoyed traveling with his wife, Sandy throughout the United States and abroad. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and was a loving dedicated family man. Al enjoyed spending time with his Rock Steady friends for Parkinson’s at Boxfit. He also enjoyed cooking, history, reading and was known as a “Mr. Fixit”. He enjoyed Purdue and Notre Dame Football. He coached little league baseball and basketball. Al leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, compassion and friendship, known by all as a “true gentleman”.
Al worked in investments and recovery for NIPSCO for over 30 years before retiring.
He was a member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Catholic Foresters and a former member of Knights of Columbus.
Al was proceeded in death by his parents Joseph and Beverly (Szymanski) Moon and his brother-in-law Don Watts.
He is survived by his children, Christina Moon (Allen Gaarder) of Cedar Lake, Tony (Angie) Moon of Valparaiso, and Jon (Kelli) Moon of Midland, MI, as well as his grandchildren Haley (husband Dr. Brent) Bales, Josh Zatorski, Kinley, Makayla, Kanton, Bryce and Charlie Moon.
He is also survived by his brother, Keith (Laurie) Moon of Cedar Lake, sister, Claudia (Rich) Powell of Griffith, brother, David (Linda) Moon of Crossville, TN, and sister, Pris Watts of Lowell.
Visitation will be from 11:30 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 12:30 pm on Friday, August 4, 2023 at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 2224 Sacramento Drive, West Lafayette, with Fr. Daniel Shine officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Reynolds.
