James W. Withers, 86, of Lafayette, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026, at his residence.
He was born on September 24, 1939, in Somerset, KY, to the late Chester and Lucy (Roy) Withers.
James graduated from San Diego High School while being stationed there for the United States Marine Corp. He also graduated from the FBI training academy in Quantico, VA as well as attending numerous other schools.
On December 23, 1960, he married Carol Bol in Lafayette, IN.
James retired as Captain of Detectives for the Lafayette Police Department where he worked for 25 years. He then retired from the Tippecanoe County Prosecutors Office after 10 years. He worked on many high profile murder cases and was also a handwriting specialist. James also was the head of security at the Tippecanoe Mall for many years.
He was a board member at Lafayette Christian School and a member of the American Arman F.O.P. #49.
James played music with the Country Kernals and led music jams at 3 parks and church while snow birding in Florida.
James enjoyed music, camping, and traveling.
Surviving are his wife Carol Withers, children John Withers (the late Shannon Withers), Steven Withers (Robyn), and Kristine Withers. As well as 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
James was preceded in death by his parents, 7 siblings and daughter-in-law Shannon Withers.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Community Reformed Church.
Service will be on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 11:00 am at Community Reformed Church.
