Wilbur K. Clampitt, 89, of Lafayette, died at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Indiana Veterans? Home.
Born April 17, 1921, in Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Guy and Della Kuhn Clampitt. He graduated from Clarks Hill High School in 1940.
He served in the Army from Aug. 12, 1942 to Nov. 23, 1945, under Gen. George Patton during World War II. He received five Bronze Stars for serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes campaigns.
On Sept. 11, 1948, he married Mary Ann Myer at St. Boniface, and she survives.
Mr. Clampitt retired from Purdue University as the food stores manager at Terry Courts. He also owned and operated a Pepperidge Farm franchise for many years, and previously worked for the Borden Company.
He was a member of St. Boniface Church, American Legion Post 11, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1154, 40&8 Voiture, and had served as past post commander and chairman of many committees. He was assistant leader for Boy Scout Troop 2 in the ?60s.
He enjoyed attending American Legion baseball games and Purdue football games.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Anna M. Matthys of Lafayette; and two sons, Harold Clampitt (wife: Diana) and Robert Clampitt (wife: Deborah) of Lafayette.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jay Clampitt, William Clampitt, Sarah Clawson, John J. Matthys, Eric Clampitt and Christina Senasec; and great-grandchildren, Jericha Clampitt, Luke Clampitt, Jake Clampitt, Tyler Clampitt and Brady Senasec. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Kenneth and Nelson Clampitt; and a sister, Juanita Baker.
Visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at St. Boniface Church. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Church, Fr. Tim Alkire officiating. Will was a heck of a guy, one night he had a problem with his equipment and my six year old son was home with me. So, we jumped into the car and ran over to Will&s house, while I fixed the equipment he just talked to my son like he was a grandchild. Every week thereafter he asked me, ""How&s your spitting image?"" He will truely be missed very much.

The memories I have of the now old neighborhood are the very best, and I&m sure that you all agree that we were apart of the best of what made the greatest part of America&s dream. I can even remember the smell of the grass being mowed or the pile of leaves we all jumped in and thru.... It is never good-bye, because the dreams are always taking us back with a warm embrace & smile.

My thoughts are with you during this time of lose. It wasn&t too long ago I was looking at old scouting pictures of Harold and his dad at a father and son knot tying contest in our backyard on Main street. Where have the years gone! Mr. Clampitt was a good man and a good scout leader too.
