Susan Higgins Musial of Lafayette (formerly of Centerville, IN) passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013. She was born in Dayton, Ohio to Fred J. and Virginia Higgins. She married her beloved husband Dennis Musial on October 14, 1978 in Richmond, IN. Susan graduated from Fairborn, OH High School and earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Montana where she was a sister in and president of the Beta Rho chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. She earned a Master's degree from Ball State University. She was a lifelong educator, teaching first at Yakutat, AK Community Schools then in Richmond Community Schools where she taught at Hibberd and Test Middle Schools and Richmond High School. She was named teacher of the year at Richmond High School in 1999. She also taught adult night school in Yakutat and Richmond. She lived in or visited all 50 states and many countries in Europe, however no place compared to Finley Point on Flathead Lake, MT. Surviving Susan are her mother Virginia; husband Dennis; son Nick (Elizabeth); sister Nora Taylor (Richard); sister-in-law Alice Wasmund and brother-in-law William McMahon; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Fred and her sister Kathleen McMahon. Funeral mass for Susan will be at 11:00 on Monday, November 18, 2013 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Lafayette, IN. Visitation will be Sunday evening, November 17, 2013 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Rosary 7:15PM at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, 400 Twyckenham Road, Lafayette, IN 47909. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Multiple Sclerosis Society, Indiana State Chapter, 3500 DePauw Blvd, Suite 1040, Indianapolis, IN 46268 or the charitable organization of your choice.

Dennis & family I have such great memories of Sue and the time we worked and taught at Richmond HIgh School. She was a wonderful teacher and a real inspiration to her students. I so enjoyed working with her on the spirit team. Our aim was to make RHS a better, more fun place. We may not have always succeed with the school but we always had so much fun at our meetings. She will be so missed by so many but leaves so many students better off by having her as their teacher.

Dear Mr.Musial and family. My heart goes out to you all. We lost a wonderful woman. She touched many many young ladies because she was very dear to me and many of my class mates from Hibberd and Mr. Musial you did the same. We were the class that was there during your dating years. And it was true love you had for each other.She had nick names for all of her favorite students. She a fun person to be around. So from the class of Hibberd Wildcats 1978. Mrs. Musial was a wonderful Home Economics teacher. I was one of her students at Richmond High School in Richmond, Indiana. I remember her wonderful sense of humor in teaching and she seemed to enjoy what she taught. Many of us teens were already parents in high school and she had such a caring and non-judgmental light about her. She could be serious and still be funny. She made my high school experience meaningful and enjoyable in my child development courses. May God continue to bless and strengthen her family.

Dennis, I am so sad to hear that Susan has passed. For a while, I managed to stay in touch by email but we hadn't corresponded for some time. I loved her and always knew she loved me and was my friend particularly on rough days at RHS. We enjoyed spending time with one another when we were attending educational conferences out of the area and we could be roommates. Lots of fun!!! I know she loved my son Jeffrey too.
