Shirley Maxine ‘Grandma Max’ LeFevers, age 92, died at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday April 7, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 7, 1927 in Plymouth Indiana, she was the first child of Delbert and Bertha Elliott who raised their family in Montana.

She married Bob LeFevers on September 16, 1950 in her hometown of Havre, Montana. Together they had seven children. Surviving are Mike LeFevers (Barb), Shirley Gamble (Steve), Mary Henry, Bob LeFevers (Jane), Karen Wethington (Doug), Crystal Acree (Hal). Son James Delbert died soon after birth.

Also surviving is sister Judy Sargent (Gary), and so many loved grandchildren and great grandchildren and their families.

Her adored brothers, Jim and Jerry, preceded her in death, and sister Helen Marilyn died as a toddler.

She attended Montana State Northern University and worked for more than 30 years at Purdue University, the majority of that time at Tarkington Hall.

She will be remembered always for her joyous spirit, unlimited curiosity and optimism for life and the extraordinary love she showered on each member of her family.

She will be missed beyond measure.

The family is grateful for the love and friendship of so many but would like to give special thanks to the entire Franciscan Hospice staff, especially Beth and Rhonda who gently cared for her during her final days.

Memorials can be made to her church, Stidham United Methodist Church. Maxine loved her church around the corner and considered the members her family as well.

My prayers are with your family at the loss of Max. I have very fond memories of her and our time at Tarkington Hall. I will always remember her kindness and her sense of humor!

I'm so sorry about Max's death. I hope your family memories will help you through this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Max and I both worked in the Purdue Residence Halls. I appreciated her sense of humor. After she retired, I enjoyed visiting with her at her family's Homestead Pine Tree Farm every Christmas.

Our love and prayers are with you all. We will always remember the love and fun she shared with us.

Maxine was a delight to be with at exercise classes at the YMCA! Her optimism and her positive outlook on life were qualities that made It fun to be in class with her. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She will be greatly missed by her Silver Sneakers friends. She and her family are in our thoughts and prayers. Kathy and Sarah Clark

I LOVED working with your mom in the Urgent Care! She was always so full of life & laughter. I swear she could carry on a conversation with a post lol. Once I told her “no talking to the patients after 10pm” when we were wait to go home but the last patient was still chatting with Max. Vicky Hrdy I am sorry for you loss. I know she loved her family very much! P.S. my son Frank used to play with Jason at their babysitters Mrs Blevins. Frank is married now with 2 girls - one 3 1/2 & one born 4/13.

There is no one I remember more fondly than Max from my time inTarkington Hall at Purdue University. I was a resident of Tarkington from ‘82-‘85 and President in ‘85. I interacted with Max almost daily. Her laugh was infectious and her smile seemed to fill the entire lobby! She was my friend, my Mom, and on occasion, a wicked fast typist when I was late with an assignment! I am smiling as I type this thinking of how she always had a way of picking up my spirits when I was a stressed out college. I am also crying thinking that she is gone. I am proud to have known her and and I am a better person because of her.

Dear Maxine: You were a very special neighbor. Didn't talk much at home but wouldn't miss chatting while at out kids and grandkids school events. Always loved seeing you at Mintonye, Southwestern and McCutcheon. and catching up on whatever was going on in our families since our kids were the same age! Since we have moved from around the corner, where we built our homes the same time, 46 years ago, we have passed there several times and I always say, "I wonder how Maxine is", but never stop. You know how life is....always in a hurry then it becomes too late. RIP dear friend and neighbor!!! Don and Carolyn Weedon

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Max. She was one special lady that we thought so much of. Keep all of your memories close to your hearts and she will always be with you. You all have our deepest sympathy.

Maxine was very special to me many years ago. I worked with her for a time at Lafayette Home Hospital, and she hosted our wedding reception at your home in January 1961 — I’m told one of the coldest days in Indiana history! We lost track of one another through the years, but I will always remember her with great affection. Fortunately a relative in Indiana who also attended the reception remembered her and let me know. My condolences to you all.
