Shirley Mae (Earl) Jones of West Lafayette passed away at Westminster Village on Wednesday, September 28, at 4:45 p.m. Shirley was born in Rochester, MN, on October. 9, 1924. She was the daughter of Reuben A. and Mary V. Earl. She grew up in Minneapolis, MN, and attended Carlton College in Northfield, MN, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She was a stewardess with Mid-Continent Airlines for several years. On April 19, 1952, she married Robert W. Jones of West Lafayette, IN, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis, MN. He preceded her in death on December 9, 1999. Surviving are two sons, Robert Michael Jones of Lafayette and Allen Robert Jones of Athens, GA; one grandson, Sean Michael Jones, and one sister, Judith Earl Leill of Lafayette. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary E. Vyverberg and Virginia Bascom, and one brother, Gordon R. Earl. Shirley was a member of Psi Iota Zi and was an avid bridge player. She grew beautiful African violets in her sunny living room. She also created many colorful ceramic figures, many of which she gave as gifts. She worked for several years at Baugh and Reser Hardware as a color and design consultant, and attended Bible Study Fellowship at Kossuth St. Church. A memorial service will take place at Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, IN with the Rev. David Comstock officiating on Sunday, October 2nd at 2:00 p.m., with visitation at the church immediately following the service. Soller Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be given to Central Presbyterian Church.
