Sharon Kay (Hornikel) Day, 83, of Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Creasy Springs Health Campus.
She was born November 14, 1941, in Green, KY, to the late Clarence and Bernice Delilah (McCleese) Hornikel.
Sharon grew up in Careys Run of West Portsmouth, Ohio, and graduated from Portsmouth West High School in 1961.
She excelled in administrative services and bookkeeping, using those skills at various military bases, NASA, and accounting/legal firms. After retiring in the mid 1970s, she developed a successful Mary Kay business for several years. After closing that business, she continued to use her skills in a variety of professions including accounting, legal, security, and retail firms.
Sharon enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, reading and playing board games and cards. She will be fondly remembered as a fiercely devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She was known to have a gentle hand with a necessarily firm, sassy, and many times sarcastic word. She was shelter to the shelterless and a second mom to many whom she helped navigate the recovery from addiction. She is greatly revered by her family and friends and will be missed even more so.
Surviving is a son, Edgar Blaine “Eddie” (wife Shelly) Day, II of Lafayette, a sister, Karen (husband Carl) Shaw of Portsmouth, OH, a brother, Martin (wife Phyllis) Hornikel of McDonald, OH, three grandchildren, Megan (husband Cameron) McWilliams, Rebekah (husband Trae) Whisler and Blaine (wife Courtney) Day. Also surviving are six great grandchildren, Sami, Charlie, Blakely, Colter, Kaia and Cora.
Sharon was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Byrd, and two brothers, Bill and Dan Hornikel.
Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until the time of the service at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909. Burial will follow at Meadow View Cemetery in Lafayette, IN.
