Sara was born on August 21, 1949, in Indianapolis to Herman and Ganelle Gregory. She graduated from Purdue University and went to work for the state of Indiana as a trainer. After working for the state for a few years, she went to training to become a chaplain and volunteered 3rd shift hours for the local Hospice while keeping her daytime job with the state. She truly believed her mission on earth was to help others and be there for them spiritually. Her total work history were careers that met that criteria. She was kind, loving and non-judgmental and was always available if she could help. She made an enormous difference in so many peoples’ lives! When Sara was not working, she loved being creative and working on art.
The happiest day of her life is when she married Charles VanMatre, December 7th, 1996. She had waited a long time for the right person and their relationship was special, just like Sara! When Sara was not working, she loved being creative and working on art. On Tuesday, January 31st, she lost her battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband, Charles VanMatre, her son, Brett (Shanna) VanMatre and her grandchildren: Nick VanMatre, Taylor VanMatre, and Logan VanMatre and by her brother-in-law, Robert VanMatre. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Shane VanMatre and her sister-in-law, Wanda VanMatre. We are planning a Celebration of Life and will contact all her friends to be part of it.
