Russel J. McCormick

Russel J. McCormick, 86, of West Lafayette, died at 9:14 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Central.
Born Feb. 24, 1923, in Benton County, he was the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Minier McCormick.
He graduated from Freeland Park High School and received his bachelor?s degree in agriculture from Purdue University in 1950. While at Purdue he played on the basketball team. He served in the Army.
On Nov. 14, 1953, he married Barbara Mann in Muncie, and she died Jan. 29, 2006.
Mr. McCormick was an ag extension agent for Purdue University for 36 years before retiring in 1987. During his career he covered Park, Deleware, Jennings and Warrick Counties.
He was a member of Covenant Church, Kiwanis Club, Coffee Klatch and Ag Alumni, and was an avid sports fan.
Surviving are a son, Robert McCormick of West Lafayette; a daughter, Karen McCormick of Sherman Oakes, Calif.; and a brother, Wendell McCormick (wife: Lois) of West Lafayette.
Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Kelly McCormick-Bangs and John McCormick. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert McCormick.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to an 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Covenant Church, 211 Knox Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47906, with Sally McIntire officiating.

Joe and I are so sad to hear of Russell&s sudden death. We want to send our love during this difficult time.

I have fond memories from childhood of Russell - his kindness and generosity. I still have my campstove that he painted with me on a visit to him and Barbara in West Lafayette and think of him every time I see it in my garage.

So sad we lived so far apart and could not spend more time together.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. McCormick. My father Gus Gustafson enjoyed daily Koffee Klatch with Mr. McCormick and I enjoyed making his acquaintance as well.
