Roy L. Schwamberger, 95, of West Lafayette, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 29, 1914, in Warren County, and was the son of the late Charles and Bertha Bower Schwamberger. He graduated from Otterbein High School in 1932.
On July 20, 1940, he married Ruth M. Scott. She died Oct. 20, 1975. He married Sylvia Ellsworth on July 16, 1977. She died July 5, 2006.
Mr. Schwamberger farmed with his father and raised purebred Percheron draft horses. In 1937, one of his horses, Kinlett, won its class at the Indiana State Fair and the overall reserve grand champion in its class. In 1940, when he began farming on his own and retired in 1979 from his farm in Benton County.
He was a member of Linwood Church of Christ and enjoyed traveling and watching football and basketball games.
Surviving are a son, Charles F. Schwamberger (wife: Judy) of West Lafayette; and three sisters, Laura Parlon of Powell, Tenn., Virginia Davis (husband: Chet) of Lafayette and Juanita Rogers (husband: John) of Greenwood.
Also surviving are 2 granddaughters Carin McAtee (husband: Dave) of Mason, Ohio, and Christina Popp (husband: Jason) of West Lafayette; a stepgranddaughter, Kim Beam (husband: Chris) of Westfield; 3 great-grandchildren; and 4 stepgreat-grandchildren. Roy was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Murray in 1993.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway, West Lafayette, IN 47906, Pastor Guy Brown will officiate. Interment Pond Grove Cemetery in Otterbein. Those wishing may contribute to the American Cancer Society.
