Clara Rosa Felling Byers passed away peacefully at 11:10 A.M. on Monday, January 25, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Hospital East, Lafayette, Indiana. She was born February 22, 1916 in Terre Haute, Indiana and married Charles Edward Byers of Jackson Township, Indiana on May 10, 1942 at the Terre Haute farm home of her parents Ernest Fredrick Felling and Lula Louise Hein Felling. Rose earned her undergraduate teaching degree with a double major in Home Economics and Physical Education and Health from Indiana State University. She continued her education at Purdue University obtaining her Master’s Degree in Home Economics Nutrition. She began her extensive teaching career at Glenn High School in Vigo County, Terre Haute, Indiana and then moved to Tippecanoe County where she obtained a teaching position at Jackson Township School, where she met her future husband, Charles Edward Byers. Rose taught at several schools in Tippecanoe County for nearly four decades, including Romney, Wea, Clarkshill, and Southwestern. Rose was a long time member of Jackson United Methodist Church, Romney United Methodist Church, Romney United Methodist Sewing Club, Eastern Star, WSCS, Home Economics Club, Birthday Club as well as being a 4-H Leader in Tippecanoe County for over twenty years. Preceding her in death, along with her parents and husband, are two brothers: Edward Felling and Charles Felling. Surviving are her three daughters: Mary Lou Miller (late Dr. Sherwin U. Miller) of Carmel, California, Kay Anne Baker (late Richard D. Baker) of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Marsha Rose Byers (Craig G. Gipson) of Romney, Indiana; two grandchildren, Kerri Anne Baker of Mulberry, Indiana and Andrew Wayne Baker (Jennifer Jo Baker) of Lafayette, Indiana; one great grand-daughter, Sophie Grace Baker of Lafayette, Indiana and two nephews and one niece. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Saturday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, Pastor Chester Tague officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Romney, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Romney Fire Department.
