Robert P. Miller, 79
Robert Phillip “Bob” Miller, 79, of Lafayette, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2011, at University Place Health Center, West Lafayette.
Born Sept. 15, 1931, in Terre Haute, he was the son of the late and Harold and Kathryn Renner Miller. He was a 1949 graduate of Jefferson High School and attended Purdue University.
He married Frances Virginia Corns in Lafayette on May 16, 1954. She died in 2004.
Mr. Miller was a 20 year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department where he attained the position of Chief of Police. After retiring from the police department, he worked as director of special services for Russell F. Davis Co. and Fairfield Contractors and then as safety and security manager for Wabash National Corp. He served eight years on the Lafayette City Council and four years on the Tippecanoe County Council.
He was an elder at Immanuel United Church of Christ, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police, Elks, Sister City, Lafayette Police and Fire Retirees Association, and one of the founders of the Greater Lafayette Safety Council.
He served as president of Lafayette Fraternal Order of Police, Greater Lafayette Safety Council, Lafayette Housing Authority, Tippecanoe County Jail Authority when the jail was built, and Tippecanoe County Building Authority when the jail was expanded. He served as vice president of Sister City, Trustee of FOP Lodge, and Treasurer of Waterstone Homeowners Association. He chaired the committee in the formation of Lafayette Crisis Center and served on the state board of the IDAC, representing the local police departments in setting up the crime information center for the state.
Surviving are a son, Robert Mitchell “Mitch” Miller of Miamisburg, Ohio, and a daughter, Beth Schroeder (husband: Robert) of Lafayette; and a sister, Patricia A. George (husband: Paul) of West Lake, Ohio.
Visitation 2 hours prior to a 6:30 p.m. memorial service on Wednesday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob?s memory may be made to the Lafayette Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 49, 419 Main St., Lafayette, IN 47901. I learned of Bob&s passing last night to late to make it up to Lafayette for the service. I wanted to let you know how much Bob meant to my Farther. My Dad William D. Martin worked for Bob at the Lafayette Police Department for several years and lifelong friendship developed from that. Both my Farther and my Mom spoke of Bob often and always fondly. I hope that your hearts will be comforted by knowing that Bob is with his Heavenly Farther now and enjoying the fruits of his Earthly labors. He will be missed by my family! God Bless.

Dear Miller Gang:
I met you at Fran&s funeral, where you included me like family...
I am so sorry I cannot visit with you today. I was shocked to read of Bob&s death.
I cannot imagine your sorrow and loss. I&m still grappling with Fran&s death.
After Koehler&s closed in 2006, I returned to school to earn a BSN in nursing at St. Elizabeth here in town.

I big part of my motivation came from both Fran and Bob. My goal is to work with brain cancer, stroke, Parkinson&s and Alzheimers patients, AND their family-caregivers.
Sadly, summer school has me tied up in classes and meetings today and tonight...school never ends, it seems.

I hate not visiting with you, but am grateful to be able to leave you this message.

So sorry to hear about Bob passing. Bob was a great person who has given so much to his fellow man (women) in many ways. I always enjoyed spending time with Bob, he had a way of making people feeling comfortable. Also enjoyed his story telling, something I know he liked to do.

Bob will be missed by many, Bob was one-of-a-kind.

I can remember growing up as a kid, Bob was our crossing guard up at 5 points when we walked to Murdock School. My sisters and I liked him very very much because he became our friend and not just a police officer. Sometimes on Friday&s before we were allowed to cross the street, Bob would stand in the middle of 5 points stopping traffic and let us walk in the middle of the street to go home insteasd of having to walk along the crossings. I can remember this as if it were yesterday. Bob was a very good guy and I did see him along while back, not sure where and I went up to him and said hi and told him who I was and that I remembered him being our crossing police man. He chuckled that I had remembered him and that it had been a long long time ago. My condolences to the family on the loss of Bob.

Our deepest sympathies in the loss of your father. He was a wonderful man, whom I enjoyed visiting with and serving with on the Waterstone Homeowners board. He had so much knowledge to share and good stories to tell from the great life he lived. Please take comfort knowing he is in a better place now and still watching over you.
