Phyllis C. Scanlon of West Lafayette, died March 2. She was born on July 19, 1940, in Cincinnati, and graduated from Mother of Mercy High School. Phyllis graduated from Mercy School of Nursing and practiced nursing in Cincinnati, Algeria, and Cleveland.
On May 8, 1965, Phyllis married John C. “Jack” Scanlon. They resided in Cleveland and Alaska before settling in West Lafayette in 1971. She worked for 17 years at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, first as family life coordinator and later as administrator and pastoral associate. Phyllis loved children and served her community as a board member of Group Homes for Children of Lafayette and Kids Konnected. She was also a founding member and treasurer of Indiana Voices for Women.
A mother of four and grandmother of six, Phyllis was devoted to her family. She loved to spend time gardening, quilting, and knitting. She took pleasure in nature and relished a good sunset. She found support and community through her spirituality book group.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Jack; her son Matt (Patti) of Brookfield, Wisconsin; her daughter Lisa (Jennifer) of Washington, D.C.; her daughter Susan (Brett) of West Lafayette; her son Dan (Jamie) of Meridian, Idaho; and grandchildren John, Ben, Avery, Max, Sam, and Charlie. She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Catherine Steinker, and is survived by her sisters, Clare (Ray) Kentrup and Nancy (Jack) Strotman.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, March 10, at 10 am. A reception in honor of Phyllis will be held at Whitsel Hall, Westminster Village, West Lafayette on March 10 from 4 to 6 pm.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Lafayette Urban Ministry or West Lafayette Tree Friends.
