Patricia E. Stephenson died peacefully on Oct. 3, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois surrounded by her loving family. She follows her husband John Stephenson, who died in 2009.
Born in Lafayette on November 27, 1943 to the late Jane (Latta) and Robert Arman, Pat graduated from Central Catholic High School. She and John married in 1980. During her long career of community service, Pat served two terms on the Board of the Lafayette School Corporation and on the committee that earned Lafayette the “All-America City Award” in 1995. She worked as Executive Director of Lafayette Neighborhood Housing Services from 1988-2007, during which time she helped save and redevelop historic Jefferson High School, and earned a YWCA Salute to Women Outstanding Woman in Government Award. In 2002, she was named Staff Member of the Year by the Indiana Association for Community Economic Development, an organization she helped found. She also served on the Boards of the National Neighborhood Housing Network and the Neighborhood Capital Corporation. In 2004, she completed the NeighborWorks Achieving Excellence Program for nonprofit executives at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government as a member of its charter class.
Pat is survived by her sons Mike Insko, Kevin Insko, Jeff Insko, and Chukie Nwokorie; her daughter Heather Stephenson Morell; and her sisters Penny Douglass and Pam Van Kurin. She was devoted to and adored by her grandchildren Joey, Jake, Jessi, JR, Elizabeth, Michael, Andrew, Emeka, and Chioma.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 5-8 pm at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel. A service will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, also at Soller-Baker. Entombment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Homestead CS in Lafayette, the American Cancer Society, or a local animal shelter.
