Nancy J. Litzenberger

Nancy J. (Lehman) Litzenberger, aged 78, passed away on March 31, 2021 following a period of declining health. She was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on May 28, 1942 to the late James Franklin Lehman and Betty Jayne (McCash) Lehman.

Nancy grew up and went to primary and secondary school in Paris, Illinois. She attended Indiana University and graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in 1966 at a time when relatively few women entered the legal profession. On April 8, 1967, she married Sam Watters Litzenberger, who she met in law school. They moved to Warren County, Indiana, where she remained a resident until near the end of her life. Sam entered the law practice of Allen Sharp, who was subsequently appointed to the federal bench, and then Nancy joined Sam creating the law firm of Litzenberger & Litzenberger. She continued to work as an attorney in the practice until her retirement at the end of 2018.

Nancy was a member of the Warren County Bar Association, and her legal work focused mainly on family law, trusts and estate planning, and taxes. She often served as guardian ad litem to represent the interests of children in court proceedings. She served as the attorney for, among other government entities, the Williamsport Town Council and Warren County Commissioners. She was active in Tri Kappa, supporting its philanthropic work, and she provided service to the community in many ways. She was an avid reader, and of particular note is her long service on the Board of the Williamsport-Washington Township Public Library, serving as Board President during the construction of the new library. In 2016, she was honored for her service to the community by being selected as one of Warren County’s representatives in the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay.

Nancy had numerous interests. She enjoyed gardening and maintained an extensive vegetable and flower garden, frequently giving away produce to friends and neighbors. She took pleasure in entertaining family and friends, and regularly hosted gatherings of her extended family. She enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles, knitted and crocheted for a time, and regularly played bridge. Over the years, she owned many cats and was devoted to them. Her cats were her pride and joy.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Sam. She is survived by her brothers, David (Janice) Lehman of Evansville and James (Brenda Capobianco) Lehman of West Lafayette as well as nieces and nephews Chris Lehman of Richland, Sean Lehman of Evansville, Lauren (Mark) Carter of St. Charles, Illinois, and Kathryn Lehman of Lafayette.

At her request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, individuals may wish to consider donating to the Warren County Community Foundation, Williamsport-Washington Township Public Library, or NICHES Land Trust. A party to celebrate her life will be held when COVID restrictions allow, and friends and family will be invited to attend.
