Mildred F. Whisler

Mildred Fern Whisler, 94, of Lafayette passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2015. She was born on November 17, 1920 in Frankfort to the late George and June Oster. She had one brother, Johnny Oster, who preceded her in death. Mildred married Hershel Whisler in 1936 and he preceded her in death in 1983. They became lifelong residents of Lafayette, raising one son Aaron Whisler (Sandy) of Ocala, FL and three daughters Carolyn Cook (Bob), Brenda Young (Bob) both of Lafayette and Sandra Whisler who passed away in 1989. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Mildred truly enjoyed cooking for her family. She was a lifelong racing fan and had made numerous trips to the Daytona 500 in the 1970's. Mildred adored NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. She loved live music and spent many a night at area lodges dancing up a storm with family and friends. Her other interest included gardening, canning, watching the Indiana Pacers, and NASCAR. She was an avid card player and her Sunday Euchre games became a family tradition loved by all. She also is survived by her grandchildren Tony and Rick Letson, Anson Whisler (Lisa), Regina Dilden, Rebecca and Jacob Lenartz, 12 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers and staff at St. Mary's Health Care for their competent and compassionate care of Mildred and our family during her final months. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Sunday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Funeral service will be at 10 am Monday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel. Interment will be at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson, IN. Those wishing may contribute to the Alzheimer's Association in Mildred's memory.
