Michael D. Franklin, 65, of Lafayette, died at 5:17 pm, Saturday, February 27, 2016 at home with his family present. Michael was born November 28, 1950 in Rensselaer, Indiana to the late Richard L. & Mary Lorraine (Makeever). He married Rebecca Greene on February 27, 1976 and she survives. He was a dedicated husband of 40 years, father, brother, and “Gramps/Papaw.” He worked for Eli Lilly Tippecanoe Labs for 35 years, retiring February 2007.
Mike never knew a stranger, loved life, always had a good joke, enjoyed spending time with friends and family, reminiscing while watching home movies, and watching or attending the Daytona 500.
Surviving with his wife, Becky, are three children, sons, Gregory A. McNeely (Dulea), Brian K. McNeely (Nancy), and a daughter, Megan R. Newkirk (Matt); 2 brothers, Joseph (Linda) of Logansport, and Carey (Jenny) of Otterbein, and a sister, Bridget McDaniel (Gary) of Lafayette. He had eleven grandchildren, Jeff, Jordan, Jeremy, and Jamie McNeely; Nate and Joel Balser, Clay, Tyler, and Kobe McNeely, and Jackson and Ethan Newkirk along with four great-grandchildren, all of Lafayette. Preceding him in death with his parents is a brother, Jim Franklin.
The family would like to thank the loving staff of Great Lakes Caring Hospice, especially his nurses Angela and Betty and aide, Chelsey.
Visitation will be 5-7 PM Wednesday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909. The Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday at St. Mary Cathedral located at 1207 Columbia Street in Lafayette, Indiana, Father Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mike's name may be made to the American Lung Association 115 West Washington Street, Ste 1180-South, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
