He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Janet Combs Ivas, children Ariel Ivas of West Lafayette, Tristan Ivas of Manitou Springs, CO, and grandson Emerson Ferry of West Lafayette; brothers James Ivas of Avon, MA, and Ronald Ivas of Las Vegas, NV; Stepfather Anastasios Baxevanis of North Eastham, MA. and several nieces and nephews.
Michael was born September 8th, 1952 in Boston MA. His mother was Susan Ivas Baxevanis of Boston and Cape Cod. Michael graduated from South Boston High School and went on to study theatre at Emerson College in Boston.
Michael had a lifelong passion for food and cooking, which was reflected in his choice of a career path. His first job, in the early 1970’s, was as a cook in a popular restaurant in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. Later he went on to become a chef at Another Season, a fine restaurant on Beacon Hill in Boston. Thereafter he became head baker for Rosie’s pastries in Cambridge, and owner-operator at Deli Roma in Stoneham, MA (1984-1991). The family then moved to the Lafayette area where Michael was general manager of O’Rear’s Pastries until 2001 when he became Regional Bakery Operations Manager for Panera Bread, then Boston Bread, retiring in 2014. Michael was sociable and loved connecting with work associates throughout his career. He also especially enjoyed traveling and sampling restaurants around the USA during his work travels.
Anyone who knew Michael knew that he was the best cook you were ever likely to meet- a true culinary visionary. He was passionate about organic food preparation and gardening. His skill, knowledge and artistry regarding cooking and baking were remarkable. He was also a dedicated organic gardener who collected heirloom seeds and grew a great variety of wonderful vegetables and flowers.
Michael was an avid lifelong Boston Red Sox baseball fan. He was a loving father to his two children and grandson and was a devoted husband to his wife Janet. He had a fantastic sense of humor, big heart, keen intelligence, and was a great conversationalist and original thinker. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
There will be a Memorial celebrating his life at 2:30 pm Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Rush Pavilion, 1915 Scott Street, Lafayette.
