Melvin “Nellie” Nelson, 96, of Lafayette, passed away at his home on May 5, 2025, surrounded by his family.
He was born April 28, 1929, to the late Morris and Marie (Klaiber) Nelson. Nellie graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High in 1947. In May of 1948, he married Dorothy “Dottie” Kaiser. Proving she was the love of his life they were together 63 years until her death in 2012.
Nellie worked as a machinist at Ross Gear for 44 years, retiring in 1992. He also was part owner-operator of Elston Lanes until its sale in 1985. In 1997 he was inducted into the Lafayette Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Nellie loved spending time with his family and friends. Many days were spent playing cards, going to a casino, watching his grandkids’ games or floating down the Tippy with a fishing pole. He was an avid fan of Purdue, Cincinnati Reds and his ever-suffering Chicago White Sox.
Nellie was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dottie, brother Donald, son Larry and great-granddaughter Madison DePrey.
Surviving are his children Peggy Richardson, Debra (Jerry) Cox, Jani (Brian) Dunham all of Lafayette, Stephen (Kathy) Nelson of Ft Branch, IN. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many he considered part of his family.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Rosary will be at 4:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am on Friday, May 9, 2025, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Father Matthew Jakupco officiating. Interment will be at St. Boniface Cemetery.
