Melvin A. Newlin

Melvin A. Newlin, 85, of Lafayette, died at 1:37 AM Saturday, January 28, 2012 at St. Elizabeth East.
He was born December 1, 1926, in Bloomingdale, to the late Edgar H. and Lelia Penny Newlin.
He served in the United States Army from April 23, 1945 to December 10, 1946.
On July 30, 1950 he married Edna Marie Adams in Rockville and she survives.
Melvin was a heavy equipment operator for the Local 841 Operating Engineers working across the country in all of the lower 48 states, finishing his career before retiring in 1989 with Lafayette Water Works.
Melvin was a member of Brady Lane Church of Christ and American Legion Post 492. He volunteered at St. Ann Soup Kitchen, Brady Lane Church of Christ Food Pantry. For several years he enjoyed working in the concession stand at Mackey Arena and Ross Ade Stadium, playing cards and was a avid IU Basketball fan.
Surviving along with his wife are two sons Joe E. Newlin (wife Brenda) of Vincennes, J.D. Newlin (wife Tamara) of Lafayette and five grandchildren, Kalissa Johnson (husband Ryan), Kara, Devin, Haley and Hanna Newlin and 2 great grandchildren Landon and Kaitlyn Johnson.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers Donald and Barney Newlin.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Brady Lane Church of Christ with J. William Overbay officiating. A graveside service will be at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, January 31 at Bloomingdale Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
Those wishing may contribute to the Brady Lane Church of Christ Food Pantry.

The Bloomingdale Academy Reunions will not be the same. My 1st cousin Mel was a popular person. His friends will feel the loss of his presence and humor.
I will especially miss all my visits with him. My family, sons and daughters and my husband and I wish to express our sympathy for Marie, her sons and their families. I hope Mel doesn&t give the Lord too hard of a time in Heaven.
