Max Ronald Herbert, 89, of Lafayette, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025, and was reunited with his wife, children, family, and friends in Heaven.
He was born, December 23, 1935, in Richmond, IN, to the late John Glen and Mary Alice (Swallow) Herbert.
Max married Elizabeth “Liz” and had four children. They were married for 63 years before she preceded him in death in 2020.
At a young age, Max enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, later transferring to the United States Air Force, ultimately retiring as a Master Sergeant after 24 years of honorable service. He had many adventures and friends in the military. A military family, he retired in Lafayette, IN to obtain a new career and spend time with his mother and sisters who also lived in Lafayette. He worked for and retired from Caterpillar. Eventually retiring in Lakeland Florida. Max and Elizabeth loved the beach, swimming, cruising, and all the activities and adventures offered in their new home. Proud of his military service, Max was privileged to be able to participate in the Honor Flight in 2017.
Max returned to Lafayette to be with his remaining family. He was loved by many and will be missed always.
Surviving is a daughter, Lynette Marie Alexander (Marcus, Gary) of Lafayette, IN; six grandchildren, Becky, Michael, Andy, Zachary, Sam and Michael; a daughter-in-law, Judy Herbert; son-in-law, Scotty Rumpza; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Herbert.
Max was preceded in death by three children, John Edward Herbert, Russell Eugene Herbert, and Debra Lynn Rumpza. Along with 3 siblings, John Herbert, Barbara Conner (Harold) and Joan Hassan (Mohamed).
In lieu of flowers, Lynette requests guests donate perennial plants, or strong trees, as a memorial garden will be created to honor those in the Herbert family who are no longer with us.
A celebration of Max’s life will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Lynette and Gary’s home at 2424 Harding Rd., Lafayette, IN 47905.
