Maurice “Morrie” Lorrell Bruinsma, 84, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 30th, 2021, with his family by his side.
He was born, September 23,1937 in Stickney, South Dakota to his parents, Jasper Walter Bruinsma and Pearl Helen (DeHaai) Bruinsma. Morrie served his country honorably in the Army during the Korean War as a Military Policeman and earned his GED during his service. Upon relocating to Lafayette, he worked at Korschot’s Heating & Air Conditioning eventually purchasing and owning the business for 20 years. He spent more than 40 years with Korschot’s.
He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, June Annette (Phillips) Bruinsma and their daughter, Natalie A. (Bruinsma) Schafer and her children Chase Baumgarner, Emerson Baumgarner and Kinohi Schafer and their son, Troy A. Bruinsma and his wife Rosalyn J Bruinsma, and his son Tucker W. Bruinsma and their daughter, Grace A. Bruinsma. He is also survived by his brothers Larry Bruinsma, Dr. Douglas Bruinsma and sister, Donna (Bruinsma) Pruitt.
Morrie played 3rd base for the Fast Pitch Softball Team of the Lafayette Merchants where they won several league championships. He was active in his church as a Deacon at First Reformed Church of Lafayette and on the Budget Committee at Dayton United Methodist Church. He was active in the Builder’s Association of Greater Lafayette and for the Builder’s Association of Indiana, earning the coveted Golden Spike for his membership contributions over the years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Lafayette Boys and Girls Club. He was a long-time member of the John Purdue Club and enjoyed Boilermaker basketball and football. He was known for his love of family, camping, fishing, hunting, baseball, auto racing, classic cars, tractors, the American Bald Eagle and working on his properties.
Morrie is preceded in death by his parents, Jasper W. Bruinsma and Pearl H. (DeHaai) Bruinsma and brother Ronald Bruinsma.
The visitation will be from 11:30 am until the time of the service at 1:30 pm on Thursday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Boulevard, Lafayette, Indiana 47909. Private internment of his remains will at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette thereafter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Maurice L. Bruinsma to the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club of Tippecanoe County, 1529 N. 10th Street, Lafayette, IN 47904.
