Matthew W. Helmerick, 61, of Lafayette, passed away, after a courageous four year battle with cancer, on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. He was born October 2, 1963, in Lafayette, IN, to Melvin and Linda (Ledman) Helmerick of Lafayette.

Matt was a 1981 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and served in the US Air Force for 10 years. On September 1, 1984, he married Rose-Ethel Walters in Lafayette and she survives.

Matt was a Mail Handler for the US Postal Service for 26 years and retired on November 1, 2019. He was a member of The Grove Covenant Church, American Legion Post 11 and the National Street Rod Association.

Matt centered his life around God, his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. He was always there to help his family, friends, and neighbors. Matt lived life to the fullest and rarely turned down the opportunity to try something new or challenge himself. He was a jokster at heart and could respond with the one-liners faster than you could blink, and if you knew him at all you knew which Indiana college he rooted for (go IU).

He enjoyed golf, working on his hot rod, music from almost any genre, working in his yard, drawing, making bracelets, traveling with Rose, and was an avid Opa to his grandchildren. Matt was so good at remembering off-hand comments by Rose, his girls, the grandkids, or his parents, especially when they said they liked something. It wasn’t surprising to find that “something” show up under the Christmas tree or as a random present. He was a true giver at heart.

Surviving along with his wife are his daughters Brittany L. (Micah) Montes of Chesapeake, VA, Katie D. (Corey) Aldridge of Lafayette, grandchildren Gabby and Asher Montes and Brady and Brooks Aldridge.

Also surviving is his brother Mark A. (Mendy) Helmerick of Lafayette.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, Pastor Stacey Littlefield officiating. Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette, IN.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Phil’s Friends in Matthew’s memory.

I'm so sorry for your loss. When I moved to Indiana, Matt was one of the first to make me feel welcomed. His kindness and energy will be missed.

My heart goes out to. Rose and family with this news of. Matt’s passing. He was such a brave soul and approached life with such determination and love within his heart. Matt always had a smile and an abundance of humor spread with generosity and love for life. He touched many lives and will be very missed by all of us who enjoyed just being in his presence .

What a beautiful life story! My heart goes out to you and your family Rose.

Rose, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. My prayers to you, your girls, and your grandchildren.

The conversations and wisdom you gave will forever be remembered. I’ll save you a seat with a nice glass of Maker’s. Praying for your wife and beautiful family and grateful for all of y’all’s precious memories you were able to make in your last days. While your soul is at rest you leave behind an amazing legacy.

Matt was a wonderful man. He was funny and with a wonderful heart.att will be missed terribly.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. Wish we were able to be there for you. Matt was a really great young man he will be missed. I always loved when he said the prayer at our family reunion.

Matt was a brother to many. Also a dear friend who supported us all whenever it was needed. Matt you were a great example of a husband, father, grandfather and friend. Until we meet again brother.

My brother , my friend , the memories are too numerous to count. I could always count on you for wisdom, a laugh, a helping hand and as a partner in crime . You never let me down. God knows how much I miss you !! Until we meet again on the other side … thanks for having my back all these years.

Very special individual. Matt and I reconnected at the JHS Athletic Birdie Bash. Really enjoyed talking with him and catching up. He really enjoyed the game of golf and was enthusiastic about playing in the fundraiser!!! Will be missed and may a special blessing of comfort be with his family.

Matt has been our neighbor for 11 years. He was the kindest and generous man. He always was there when we needed him. He would watch our dogs when we were gone and loved on them all the time. He and Barry joked all the time, they were just alike. I can’t tell you how much we will miss him. We are out of state right now and sadly we will not be able to attend his service, which breaks our hearts. We will love on his wife Rose and be there for her in any need she may have. We love you Matt and you will always be remembered.
