Mary Jane Boyle, 97, formerly of West Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus, Indiana. Born in Advance, Indiana on May 4, 1914, she was the youngest of 6 children of Arthur H. and Alice F. Yager. She graduated from Advance High School in 1932, and later earned her Bachelor and Master?s Degrees in Business Education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN. Her 1rst teaching job was in Remington, Indiana. In 1938 she married Howard J. Boyle in Advance, Indiana, at her family home. She and Howard lived several places until they settled in W. Lafayette where her husband was Chief Accountant at Purdue University.
After her husband was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 1952, Mary Jane returned to teaching. She taught at Monitor High School, Klondike High School, and finished her teaching career at Lafayette Jefferson High School, where she earned the Jefferson High School Wall of Fame Award. Mary Jane belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma and Alpha Delta Kappa, both teacher sororities. She also belonged to Purdue Women?s Club, Edgewood Club, Lafayette Teachers Educator?s Association, and Indiana Retired Teacher?s Association. She enjoyed volunteering at Home Hospital as a Pink Lady and also belonged to the Home Hospital Auxiliary. Mary Jane was a member of Federated Church in W. Lafayette for over 60 years where she was on numerous church committees and held different offices, most recently as the Prayer Chain Chairman, which she had a special calling for. Mary Jane had a love for serving people, whether it was friends or family. She was always taking food to a shut-in or a new neighbor. When she retired, she said she wanted to do something each day to make a difference in someone else?s life. She enjoyed gardening, reading, playing the piano, and playing bridge in her Therapeutic Bridge Club. Her greatest love was her family and she cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. Mary Jane is survived by her children, Philip F. (wife, Cathy) of Raleigh, N.C.; Carolyn J. Hart (husband, Joe) of Columbus, IN; and Thomas H. (wife, Betsy) of St. Paul, MN; seven grandchildren: Michael Boyle from Plano, TX; Brian Hart from Chicago, IL; Sarah Wierschke (husband, Kevin) from Colorado Springs, CO; Emily Nelson (husband, Erik) from Indianapolis ; Andrew Boyle, Sarah Carmack (husband, Nate), and Joanna Jones (husband, Steve) all from St. Paul, MN. She is also survived by !ve great-grandchildren, Shannon Boyle from Plano, TX; Samantha, Danielle, and Luke Wierschke from Colorado Springs; and Archer Carmack from St. Paul, MN. Also surviving are a special niece, Twylamay Hash, from Lebanon, IN, and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers Sylvan, Eugene, Theron, and Floyd Yager, a sister Lucille, a stillborn daughter Janet Sue Boyle, and a great-granddaughter Katie Madison Boyle.
Visitation 5:30 to 7:30 PM Sunday at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West. Service 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Federated Church, West Lafayette, with visitation 1 hour prior to service. Reverends Jon Carlstrom and Gary Reif officiating. Interment at Grand View Cemetery, West Lafayette. Memorials may be made to Federated Church, Hospice of South Central Indiana,
or to the charity of your choice.
