Mary Evelyn Neher, 85, of West Lafayette, died at 3:20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at University Place.
She was born Dec. 19, 1924, in Lafayette, and was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Anna Hager Ray. She graduated from Wea High School and Purdue University.
On June 30, 1945, she married George M. Neher in Lafayette. He died Oct. 1, 2003.
Mrs. Neher taught home economics and sixth grade in local schools and was a substitute teacher. She also was a food supervisor for many years at Cary Hall at Purdue. She enjoyed working with the students and managing the preseason football training meals.
She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral, the church?s Altar Society, and National Wildlife Society.
She enjoyed gourmet cooking, gardening, collecting antiques and new adventures, especially traveling in the U.S. and abroad. She was a supporter of the preservation of historical neighborhoods and natural areas.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Swank (husband: Jeffry) of Lafayette, Pamela Bishop (husband: Paul) of Arlington, Va.; a son, George R. Neher (wife: Donna) of Carmel; and a sister, Elsie Love of Tomball, Texas.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
There will be private family services at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel with entombment to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Those wishing may contribute to the Southern Care Hospice at 180 Professional court Lafayette, IN. 47905.
