Mary Beth (MB) Merkel Buescher, 71, West Lafayette, passed away on Monday evening, November 17, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. MB was the third child of four and only daughter of Elmer and Betty Merkel who preceded her in death. Born July 20, 1943 in New Kensington, PA, she attended Seattle University and graduated from the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati, OH with a BA in English and History. She was named Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1965. She married Ensign James Buescher, USNR, on August 21, 1965 in Cincinnati. Early on she was a high school teacher and then a devoted mother who expertly managed the families' 15 household moves over 31 years. No matter where she lived MB was an active volunteer and frequently assumed leadership roles. For fun there was always a gals' golf group, friendly bridge tables, entertaining or her welcoming Thursday Club. Her other interests included golf, travel and being with friends and family. She defined class and grace. She leaves many loving and caring friends she met along life's journey. MB was long sustained and nourished by her Catholic faith. MB is survived by her beloved husband, James D. Buescher and their daughter, Sarah A. Buescher (husband, Peter Cullen), Washington, DC; brothers Jack Merkel (wife, Carol), Marble Falls, TX; Jim Merkel (wife, Julie) Carlsbad, CA; Jerry Merkel (wife, Sheryne) Xenia, OH; brother-in-law Jack Buescher (wife, Sue), Glendale, OH, and brother-in-law Jerry Kirschner (wife, Nancy), Kingston, WA along with many nieces and nephews. The Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 19 at the Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Tywckenham Blvd., Lafayette IN. Mass of the Christian Burial will held Thursday morning at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 2224 Sacramento Drive, West Lafayette IN. Immediately following will be a reception for family and friends at the Lafayette Country Club, 1500 South 9th Street, Lafayette. Soller-Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Private burial will be in Cincinnati on Friday, November 21. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greater Lafayette Community Foundation, 1114 State Street, Lafayette IN 47905.
