Mary Ann McCarthy, 83, of West Lafayette, died Monday, May 2, 2016 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. Born October 12, 1932 in Garfield Heights, OH to the late Edith Irine and Thomas Francis Manley.
Mary Ann graduated from Garfield Heights High School, and received her Registered Nurse degree from St. Alexis School of Nursing in Cleveland, OH. Mary Ann attended Case Western Reserve University and St John’s College in Cleveland, OH and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. In 1957 Mary Ann married Gerald Duane McCarthy of Alton, IA and they traveled extensively with Gerald’s career as a naval officer. They retired in West Lafayette. Employment included St Alexis Hospital, The Visiting Nurse Association and University Hospitals in Cleveland. Locally her employment was with the School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University, Home Hospital, the YWCA and Riggs Community Health Center. Mary Ann was a member of P.E.O. Chapter AS and served two years as its president. She also served as president of the Purdue Woman’s Club where she was a long time member. Volunteer positions included the American Red Cross, where she served as Chairman of the Board, Delta Zeta Sorority and the Lafayette Alumnae Panhellenic Council. She has served as a member of the boards of the YMCA, Visiting Nurse Service, CASA for Kids Fund and was a CASA volunteer for ten years. She was a Life Member of the Purdue Alumni Association and a member of the John Purdue Club. She was a member of St. Ann’s Church. Hobbies included tennis, golf, travel and theater. Family and friends were an important part of her life. She has generously given of her time and talents to the community and has made a difference in her many endeavors.
Surviving along with her husband are three sons, Craig McCarthy (wife Kathryn) of Alexandria, VA, Bradley McCarthy of Costa Mesa, CA and Mark McCarthy (wife Staci) of Meredith, NH, a brother, Edward Manley (wife Dorothy), a sister, Margaret Bruckner, and a sister-in-law, Rosanne Manley, all of OH. She also leaves five grandchildren: Jennifer Lascik (husband Paul), Brandon McCarthy (wife Britta), Kristen McCarthy, Jack and Alissa McCarthy. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by five of her siblings.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 21, 2016 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 612 Wabash Ave, Lafayette, IN 47905. Mary Ann will be interned at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date.
