Marjorye “Marj” McVicker Mannering, 86, of West Lafayette passed away at 11:30 pm, Monday, February 12, 2018 at Franciscan Health, St. Elizabeth East.
She was born April 15, 1931 in Elk City, OK to the late Jesse A. and Clara M. (Hendrick) McVicker. She graduated from Berlin High School in OK, and then continued her education at the University of Oklahoma where she received her Bachelor of Music Education degree and finished her education at Purdue University where she earned her Master of Education degree. She married the love of her life, Jerry Mannering in Oklahoma on June 20, 1953. Jerry preceded her in death on April 29, 2005. Marj worked as a teacher for the Tippecanoe County School Corporation, where she taught English as a second language for 18 years. She was a devoted member of the Federated Church in West Lafayette since 1960.
Marjorye was a very outgoing person and was a member of the following organizations, Alpha Delta Pi Social Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, Purdue Women’s Club, Agronomy Women’s Club, Purdue President Council, Lafayette Symphony Guild, the YWCA, and Chapter D of the P.E.O where she was a 50 year member.
She is survived by her 3 children, Debra Lynn (Mark) Zerman of St. Louis, MO, S. Scott (Lisa) Mannering of Walton, Lisa (Keith) Schwingendorf of West Lafayette, and 8 grandchildren, Bradley Zerman, Michael (Becky) Zerman, Zachary Zerman, Clayton (Megan) Mannering, Rory (Blaine) Mannering, Megan Mannering, Jessica (Jack) Schwingendorf Roback, and Ryan Schwingendorf. Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Donovan, Edgar and J. Jay McVicker, and a sister, Mary Lou Sadler.
Memorial contributions in Marj’s name may be given to the Federated Church, 2400 Sycamore Lane, West Lafayette. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 on Friday, February 16, at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway W. West Lafayette, IN 47906. Funeral will be Saturday, February 17, 10:30 a.m. at Federated Church, 2400 Sycamore Lane, West Lafayette, IN 47906. Officiating Rev. John Williams.
Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, 1718 West 350 North, West Lafayette.
