Born February 3, 1916, in
Lafayette, Indiana.
Her father had been the
school bus driver when she
attended
elementary
school.
Marie rode
to school
each day in
the back of
a wooden
wagon
(called a
Hack) driven
by a team of horses by her
father, picking up other
children along the way in
sunshine, rain, and snow.
She attended Round Grove
Elementary School where
she won the White County
Spelling Bee at the age
of 11, which included 14
schools in competition.
Graduated from Round
Grove High School in 1934
with honors, where she
was member of the string
orchestra and played the
violin.
Mrs. Klemme rode by
train from Lafayette to Chicago
in 1933 with her aunt
and attended the World?s
Fair, “A Century of Progress”.
After high school she
worked in the “Sweet Shop”
at the Purdue Memorial
Union Building until her
marriage.
Mrs. Klemme worked
alongside her husband, and
was the co-owner and bookkeeper
for Agrico Fertilizer
Co., Miller Tire Co.,
Klemme Trucking, Jacobson
Mowers in Boswell, and
Klemme Farms for nearly
sixty years. Marie and her
husband shared the love of
riding their horses on their
farms.
She was the daughter of
Francis and Louise (Matthew)
Tyrrell.
She married L. Dean Klemme
at St. Mary Cathedral
in Lafayette on February 18,
1939, and they were married
nearly 65 years when
her husband passed away.
She and her husband had
been members of St. Mary
Cathedral in Lafayette,
Barrydale Catholic Church
in Otterbein, as well as St.
Mary?s Catholic Church at
Dunnington, Indiana, for 53
years.
Mrs. Klemme had been
a member of the Legion
of Mary & Rosary Sodality
at St. Mary?s Church in
Dunnington for 53 years,
and St. Anne?s Society. She
was also a member of Our
Lady of Lourdes Study Club
for 30 years. She was a 50
year member of the Benton
County Extension Homemakers
Club. She held many
o!ces within her study
club, Homemakers Club and
Rosary Sodality. She was
a member of the Red Hat
Society at Greentree Assisted
Living for 5 years. She
also was a member of the
Euchre Club at Greentree.
Mrs. Klemme was a stellar
contributor of many charities
dear to her heart, and
strived every day to help the
less fortunate.
Survivors include three
daughters, Sharon Tice,
husband (Mike Cohen)
of Irvine, CA, Constance
Wetli-Romine of Fowler,
and Debbie Nor””eet, husband
(Steve) of Lafayette.
Four sons, Joe Klemme,
wife (Judy) of Lebanon;
John Klemme, wife (Linda)
of Fowler; Steve Klemme,
wife (Karen) of Fowler; and
Dave Klemme, wife (Elaine)
of Monticello. Also surviving
are 22 grandchildren, 36
great-grandchildren and 7
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Dean
Klemme, on January 13,
2004; a son, Ed Klemme in
1999; and an infant daughter
in 1948. Sisters Bernice
Maxwell and Ella Bertha;
and brothers, Steve Tyrrell,
George Tyrrell and Paul
Tyrrell.
Her faith was at the core
of her everyday life. She
was a devoted wife, a loving
mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and
great-great-grandmother, a
cherished mother-in-law, a
trusted friend and a devout
Catholic.
Visitation Friday 4-8pm at
Soller-Baker West Lafayette
Chapel With rosary at 4pm.
Funeral Mass will be held
on Saturday 10am St. Mary
