Margaret L. Smith, 89, of Lafayette, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023, at IU Health Arnett Hospital.

She was born January 24, 1934, in Perry, IA, to the late Elmer A. and Francis (Workman) Roberts. She was a 1952 graduate of Perry High School and was accepted to Art School.

On November 14, 1953, she married James A. “Smitty” Smith of Montmorenci at Liberty Church in Lafayette.

Margaret worked in her home as a “Domestic Engineer.” She enjoyed her yard, country music, crocheting, decorating special cakes for birthdays, and reading. Visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are what she loved best. When asked about her fondest memory, it was high school graduation, marrying “Smitty,” and the birth of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Teresa L. (Charles) Hunter, James M. Smith, and Tracy J. (Thomas) Funkhouser; 7 grandchildren, William “Billy” Brand, Charles III “Tré (Elizabeth) Hunter, Chantal (Casey) Clark, Terra Funkhouser, Jacob Vasquez, Josue Vasquez, Ricardo Vasquez Jr; and 3 great-grandchildren also survive.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol A. (Ricardo) Vasquez; 4 sisters, Mary Jane (Bert) Henry, Doris Roberts, Katherine Edmondson, and Beaulah Woody; and 3 brothers, David (Barbara) Roberts, Melfred Roberts, and John (Eleanor) Roberts.

Visitation will be from 12:30 pm until time of service at 1:00 pm, Monday, May 22, 2023, at Tippecanoe Memory Garden Mausoleum, 1718 W. 350 North, West Lafayette, IN 47906.

Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
