Rev. Loren E. Schaffer, of West Lafayette, died May 28, 2012, at St. Anthony?s Healthcare in Lafayette. He was born on July 12, 1925, near Corydon, to the late Talmage DeWitt and Zelma Mae Schaffer. Rev. Schaffer was married on August 12, 1949, to Ruth Fritz and she preceded him in death on June 23, 2001. He graduated from high school at God?s Bible School in Cincinnati and attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill. He graduated from Oakland City College in Indiana. Loren received his Masters from the Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, and did doctoral work at the University of Miami, Fla. Rev. Schaffer was a Nazarene pastor for 55 years, serving churches in several states including Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. He most recently was Chaplain at the Indiana Veterans Home, retiring in 2001. He was a substitute teacher at Jefferson and McCutcheon High Schools during his time at the Veterans Home. Rev. Schaffer is one who loved God, loved life, loved his family and friends, and loved laughter. He was a friend to everyone he met and prayed for all the unfriendly, the poor, the sick and the lonely. He was an associate member of Faith Church, as well as his Nazarene denomination. Surviving are: two sons, Stanley Schaffer of Aurora, Texas, and Wesley Schaffer (wife Brenda) of Coconut Creek, Fla.; brother, Clifford Schaffer (wife June), of Miss.; two sisters, Dorothy Schaffer and Ruth Schaffer, of Corydon. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Loren was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; daughter Deborah King (husband Mike of West Lafayette), his twin brother Oren Schaffer, brother Paul Schaffer and sister Viola Long. Visitation one hour prior to a 3 p.m. Service Friday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Burial will be in Augusta, Indiana.
