Leona B. Cohen, 88, died peacefully on May 3. Born in Kansas City, Missouri to the late Clarissa and Leo Bobrecker, Leona was preceded in death by her older sisters, Helen, Arlene, and Charlotte. Leona was married for 68 years to Fritz G. Cohen, who survives. She is survived by her 3 children, Suzanne A. Cohen of Tucson, Arizona, Elizabeth S. Cohen of Chicago, Illinois, Jonathan L. Cohen (Kathy) of Elgin,Texas, and numerous nieces ,nephews and grand-pets.
Leona attended the University of Colorado and Boston University (Sargent College). Leona was active in the greater Lafayette community for many years volunteering as a Girl Scout Leader, Recreation Therapist at Wabash Valley Hospital, CASA, Read to Succeed, Temple Israel Sisterhood President, District 10 Federation of Temple Sisterhoods President, and National Board of Reform Temple Sisterhoods. She was a member of Temple Israel and Purdue Women’s Club. After her children were grown, she opened a retail clothing store, The Gazebo, and later worked as an agent for Prudential Insurance Company until her retirement in 2000.
Leona traveled the world. She loved giving and going to parties, she supported the arts, and endowed her children with an appreciation for books, musical theater and ballet, and good food. She was always ready for an adventure!! She is now free of the confines of a failing body and while it is a loss for her family, they are left with many wonderful memories. If there is an afterlife, she is now reunited with her beloved dog, Michelle!
Graveside services will be held 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 8 at the Temple Israel Cemetery on S. 2nd & Montefiore St. A celebration of Leona's life will be held on Tuesday, May 8, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Elmcroft Senior Living, 3575 Senior Place, W. Lafayette, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Leona’s memory may be made to Friends of Convocations, Fritz and Leona Cohen Fund, Purdue University, W. Lafayette, Indiana 47906.
