James “Lee Roy” Williams, 89, of West Lafayette died at 12:05 am, Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at the Indiana Veterans Home, West Lafayette. He was born August 1, 1928 in St. Louis, MO to the late James S. and Amanda E. (Roberts) Williams. He graduated from East St. Louis High School, earned his BS at McKendree College, his MS in education from Southern Illinois University, and a PhD from Western Illinois University. He married Lois Ann Bean on May 24, 1952 in Chester, IL. She preceded him in death on November 9, 2005. Lee Roy served in the United States Marine Corps from December 1945 through October 49 and reenlisted from December 1950 through October 1952. He was a teacher and school administrator in Illinois and then worked as an Independent Insurance Agent. He was a member of Stidham United Methodist Church in Shadeland. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #492, the 1954 Class President of McKendree College and President of the Illinois Principal Association. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and woodworking. He is survived by 2 daughters, Ruth Ann Williams of Hartford, NY and Deborah Faye Hunt of Lafayette; 3 grandchildren, Amy Lynn Thinnes (husband Jerome) of West Lafayette, Jessica Faye Howard (husband Jimmy), and Daniel James Hunt both of Lafayette; 7 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd with Pastor Michael Dillon officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorial contributions in Lee Roy’s name may be given to Stidham United Methodist Church, 5300 S. 175 West, Lafayette, IN 47909.
