Kathleen Jarvinen, 52
Kathleen M. Jarvinen, 52, of Lafayette, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at St. Elizabeth East.
Born July 9, 1958, in Anderson, she was the daughter of Henry McLain (wife: Barbara Douglas) of Anderson and Helen Kell Van Hook of Lafayette. She graduated from Madison Heights High School, and from Purdue University with a degree in elementary education. She also graduated from the John Roberts Power Modeling School.
On Oct. 16, 1993, she married Denis Jarvinen in Attica, and he survives.
Mrs. Jarvinen taught in Champaign, Ill., for 10 years, and was currently Vice President of Strategic Measurement and Evaluation, Inc. She was also president of Kozy Cape Inc., a company which she started that manufactured hand-crafted apparel for nursing home residents.
She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral in Lafayette. She was an excellent seamstress with a knack for fashion, an award-winning flower gardener, and was an active and caring guide in her children?s and granddaughter?s lives.
Surviving with her husband and parents are three sons, Jonathan Commons (companion: Leah Lampton) of Indianapolis, and Austin Jarvinen and Alexander Jarvinen, both at home; a daughter, Jennifer Rowell (husband: Philip) of Chicago; a sister, Sharon McClintock (husband: Jerry) of Anderson; and two brothers, Stephen McLain of Lafayette and John Michael McLain (companion: Rose) of Knoxville, Tenn.
Also surviving are a granddaughter, Lily Rowell of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, October 16, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Soller-Baker Funeral Home on Twyckenham Blvd in Lafayette. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, Fr. Eric Underwood officiating. Interment at Meharry Cemetery. I received the sad news about the loss of Kathleen. Although I did not know her well, I did know how kind, generous, and friendly she was just from conversations in the St. Matt parking lot and from sharing sporting events. Our children played on the same baseball team one year in the peanut league in Champaign and she showed up one day with a matching blue poncho for my daughter Sophie (Austin&s classmate) and for our little dog, so she and her puppy could match. It was such a kind and generous gesture that made both my daughter and myself very happy. She was appreciated and she will be in our prayers forever. May God wrap his arms around your family. It was my privilege to be Kathy&s friend. She was soft-spoken and kind. She loved her family very much. Every time I met her for lunch she talked of Austin and Alex and always had new pictures of Lilly.
