John Presbrey McCarthy, 85, of West Lafayette, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Central, after an extended illness.
Born June 22, 1924, in New Milford, Conn., he was the son of the late John and Alice Presbrey McCarthy.
He attended Hawken School for Boys and graduated from Cleveland Heights High School both in Cleveland, Ohio. He served in the Navy during World War II and received his bachelor?s degree in industrial education from Purdue University in 1949.
On Aug. 26, 1950, he married Dorothy Hamilton in West Lafayette, and she survives.
Mr. McCarthy worked at Purdue University?s Elliott Hall of Music for 37 years, and retired in 1986 as director.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Reamers, Purdue Players, Theta Alpha Phi and Gridiron Club; and was a supporter of Prophetstown State Park and Tippecanoe County Historical Society. He enjoyed crafts, candy making and woodworking.
Surviving with his wife are his children, Susan M. Barrows (husband: Richard) of Hillsborough, N.C., and James R. McCarthy of West Lafayette.
Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Leslie Barrows, Amanda Dimmitt, Justin and Daniel McCarthy; and 2 great-grandchildren, Nathan and Ryan Dimmitt. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Helen Corlett and Barbara Geraci.
Visitation 1 hour prior to the 2:30 p.m. service on Friday at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West. Interment at Grandview Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute to the charity of choice.
