John J. Schmitz, 88
John J. Schmitz, 88, of Lafayette, died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2010, at his residence.
Born May 31, 1921, in Herkimer, Kan., he was the son of the late Dominic and Laura Schwindamann Schmitz. He graduated from Marysville High School in Marysville, Kan.
He served in the Navy from June 2, 1942 to Oct. 21, 1945, receiving two Bronze Stars during World War II.
On Aug. 4, 1945, he married Rosemary Margaret Roswarski, and she died on March 26, 1983.
Mr. Schmitz worked as a maintenance supervisor at Purdue University, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where he was in men?s group and was an usher. He most enjoyed his time spent with his family and grandchildren.
Surviving are four sons, John D. Schmitz (wife: Judi), James D. Schmitz and Douglas E. Schmitz (wife: Kathy), all of Lafayette, and Brother Allan L. Schmitz, OFM, of Cincinnati; a daughter, Susan C. Schmitz of Lafayette; a brother, Sam Schmitz (wife: Edith) of Herkimer, Kan.; and two sisters, Barbara Nordhus of Marysville, Kan., and Isla Schwarz (husband Elmer) of Home, Kan.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jeff, Jenny, Mark, Kendra, Carrie, John-Paul, Derek, Amanda and Jack; great-grandchildren, Avery and Liam; a daughter-in-law, Sheri L. Schmitz of Lafayette; and sisters-in-law, Waltraud Schmitz and Alice Schmitz, both of Marysville Kan. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald R. Schmitz; brothers, Vere, Dominic and William Schmitz; and sisters, Bernice Pache and Anna Ring.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Fr.
